Tuesday’s Tell All – Working GirlThis week we are to tell of our “out in the work force” as opposed to “stay at home mommy” jobs. I have had a few jobs in my life, some of them were fun and some of them aren’t (present one included) My first job I got when I was 14. I went to live with my Uncle, Aunt and cousins in Jackson Hole WY. I worked at a place called Happy Joes Ice Cream and Pizza Parlor.
I had a good time and saved enough that summer to buy myself a nice stereo system (with a turn table no less). When I turned 16 I got a job at the American Fork Bakery. At first I was just the counter help, but I eventually learned how to decorate cakes. I loved learning a new skill. I worked on and off for Art and Rosette for almost 7 years.
When I was 17 I got a job at a place called Lindon Care and Training Center. It was an interesting job, and it taught me a lot about patience and understanding. I was made a supervisor when I was 19 and worked the night shift while I was going to college. I worked there full time until I got married and then quit. I went back to the bakery full time until I was about 8 months pregnant with Brittany.
When Britt was around 7 months old I started full time at NPI (which was Granite Seed 22 years ago). I learned many things about accounting and just general office stuff. I made some good friends, and got to work with my Mom. During the time that I worked for NPI, I became pregnant with my twins. I didn’t know they were twins until I went into premature labor with them two months early, so I took a maternity leave from NPI. I had signed an agreement that I would work for them for a year after I came back form the maternity leave. I had to go back to work when the twins where only 6 weeks old.
I hated, hated, hated it! 3 car seats in a Camero, different sitters, gone all day from my sweet babies (Brittany was only 16 months old when I had the twins) and just the fact that I knew I had to work. It just sucked! I was able to quit in December of 1987, and finally enjoy being Mom to my sweeties. It wasn’t until the Fall of 1988 that I started to Day Care out of my home. I enjoyed being with most of the kids (there were a few that drove me crazy), but for the most part the next 13 years was devoted to watching other peoples children. I got courious one day and started to count the children in my care for those 13 years and it numbered around 115. Many of those kids are having their own children now, makes me feel way old! In March of 2001 I decided that I needed a change, and also decided that I needed to do what Greg wanted me to do for years and that was to get a “real job”.
So I started at Granite Seed in March of 2001 and have been here ever since. I like the benefits and the pay, but it is a very negative place to work. It was nice to work with my Mom, but she retired 2 years ago, and it just isn't the same without her here. I am looking to do something else in the near future, so we will see what happens. While working at Granite Seed I got divorced, and in a round about way the led to me learning how to make photo movies. I have been able to start up a small business because of that, called Photos2Flicks.
I have been able to make enough extra money over the years to take some nice vacations. I also was lucky enough to meet my Darling Husband while working at Granite Seed. We dated 6 years before we were married. He doesn't work here any more either, and I miss him too. Lunches are very boring without my Mom and Matthew here.
I think that by far the most fun job I have ever had was doing Day Care. There were some challenges, but it enabled me to be at home with my kids. I really miss that now.

Isn't it funny that you say you miss being with all those kids? You really were so good at the whole day care thing, I don't know how you did it all those years. I really admire that. And I have to say, I miss you working at the yummy bakery, do you know how many times when I would visit you I would stick my finger in the BIG bucket of yummy frosting, mmmmmm good times.
