Tuesday Tell All - Collections

Tuesday’s Tell all is about collections. I hate to admit this, but I have OCD tendencies when it comes to collecting things. If I start a collection, I have to get the whole thing. I can’t just have part of it. This includes movie sets, books and collectables. I’m not as bad now as I have been in the past, but that is only due to having less money. The first collection we started when Greg and I were newlyweds was a green leather bound set of Encyclopedia Britannica. We spent a lot of money on that set, over $2000.00. Each year that followed, the people at Encyclopedia Britannica sent a year in review. They were $125.00 per book and we got all the way from 1985 – 1997. I hated that we had to stop getting that year in review book, but the actually stopped making them. It took me a bit to get over that.

The next obsessive collection that I can recall is the teenie Beanie Babies from McDonalds. My girls all started to collect Beanie Babies, and when the Happy Meals included the teenies, we went crazy. We had to get all in the collection, which meant we would be there first thing on the days that they would change, and if our McDonalds in American Fork didn’t have them, then we would travel all over Utah County to get it. I know now that it was a little compulsive, however, Brittany, Alecia, Andrea and I all had fun doing it.

Some of the other collections that my kids have had over the years have been, Pogs, Yugio Cards, mini Tea Sets, Beanie Babies, Nintendo Games.

One last collection that I want to mention, and this shows my “complete set” compulsiveness, is the book set “Goosebumps”. What makes this kind of funny is first of all, no one even reads them and second, I don’t really even like them. It is just a goal I have to get the complete set. I carry a list in my purse of which ones I need, and when I go to a yard sale or to DI, I look to see if the missing ones are there. I only need about 6 or so out of the whole 62 in the series. I could buy the whole set on eBay for under $150.00, but I think that defeats the purpose of collecting.

Hilarious, I remember the beanie baby craze with your kids. Do you guys still have them? Maybe they are worth something. I love this TTA, it's been fun to do. Love your guts.
